Transportation

Subway

The Stockholm subway system is almost completely accessible for wheelchair users though elevator maintenance and cleaning are a problem. You can buy a strip of tickets (“remsa”) for approx. €18 that will enable you to make 8 single trips within the city. Another alternative is a 72-hours Card for approx. €25 which allows you unlimited travel within Stockholm area during the purchased period.

Further information can be found at the transportation company´s website at http://www.sl.se/Templates/SubStart.aspx?id=1906 (in English)

Accessible taxi

Stockholm does not have many accessible taxis yet (disabled people mainly rely on the paratransit service which is not available to visitors from outside the country.) Thus, depending on the time of the day waiting time can be 45 min and more unless the exact time is pre-booked half a day or more in advance.

Here are the phone numbers to the taxi operators that have wheelchair accessible taxis:

Taxi 020: +46 8 85 04 00 (from abroad) or 020 20 20 20 (from Sweden), general switchboard, specify “wheelchair taxi”, (mainly Volkswagen Caravelle with long ramp and rear entrance), www.taxi020.se

Another, more expensive, alternative is Samtrans +46 8 522 500 00 (Monday to Friday 9 am – 6 pm ), www.samtrans.se.

Please, book the rides with them directly In order to do this you need to take into account:

  • some 30 – 45 min after scheduled arrival of the plane in Arlanda you are ready to be picked up by the cab assuming that you did not have to wait to get your luggage or wheelchair

  • for your return flight you need to check in one hour before scheduled departure

  • on a Sunday it will take you roughly one hour to get from your hotel to Arlanda Airport by taxi

The accessible cab ride from Arlanda Airport to one of the hotels may cost €75 (€90 with Samtrans) one way .

Train to/from the airport (“Arlanda Express”), http://www.arlandaexpress.com

The Arlanda Express train is accessible. The platform is located underneath the arrival hall and it goes to the central railway station in Stockholm at a cost of €25 one way per person.

Airport buses (“Flygbussarna”), http://www.flygbussarna.se/Default.aspx?lang=EN

Buses to/from the airport are not accessible. Non-wheelchair users can purchase a package deal in the arrival hall at Arlanda Airport that includes bus from Arlanda Airport to the central railway station downtown Stockholm plus a taxi from there to your hotel. The total cost might be something like €50 per person. But if you are two persons or more traveling together it might be cheaper to take one cab for the whole trip. That might cost altogether €55.
